Faculty Searches and Appointments

To ensure The College of Education and Human Ecology remains a nationally sought program by students, researchers and academics, we search nationally and internationally diverse pools of highly qualified candidates for all tenure-track positions.

  • Joint Faculty Appointments

Faculty Searches

Search procedures must entail substantial faculty involvement and be consistent with University policies as set forth in Guide to Effective Searches.

Any exceptions to this policy must be approved by the college and the Office of Academic Affairs in advance.

The dean will give department approval to start a faculty search process. This may or may not be accompanied by constraints with regard to salary, rank and field of expertise. The department chair will then appoint a committee consisting of three or more faculty who reflect the field of expertise that is the focus of the search (if relevant) as well as other fields within the department.

Faculty Appointments

Only faculty appointments that continue our excellence as a college will be considered.

  • Among the important considerations we use to select new faculty:
    • the individual’s teaching, scholarship and service record to date;
    • the potential for professional growth in each of these areas;
    • the potential for interacting with colleagues and students in a way that will enhance their academic work;
    • the ability to enhance the research and teaching mission of the academic unit and the college; and
    • the ability to attract other outstanding faculty and students to the department.

If the search does not find one or more quality candidates, no offer will be given.

The dean will decide if the search will be canceled or continued.

A search that results in a recommendation for hire will be given to the dean by the department chair for approval. Any appointment at a senior level requires Academic Affairs approval. The dean signs all offer letters.

Refer to page 5 of the college’s appointments, promotion and tenure policy for additional details.

Joint Faculty Appointments

A joint faculty appointment is a faculty member who is full time in two or more tenure initiating units.

An agreement between the colleges and their schools/departments is required for this type of appointment.

For joint faculty appointments with a non-TIU, such as an academic center, the department chair establishes an agreement, with the dean’s approval.

Emeritus Faculty Appointments

Emeritus faculty appointments are for regular faculty who retire from the university, who have been good citizens of the department, college, and university and who have served with distinction.

Faculty members initiate emeritus faculty appointments with a letter to their department chair. The request should include a copy of the faculty member’s retirement letter and a short statement of justification, including effective date of emeritus status. Recommendations are needed from the department chair, the dean, and the Office of Academic Affairs to the Board of Trustees.
